St. Philip’s Church (Harlem), NY, (http://stphilipsharlem.org/) is seeking a part-time (20-25 hours a week) Acting Organist and Choirmaster. The AOC will accompany the congregation on hymns, lead the choirs, and join the Interim Pastor in the planning and leading of worship liturgies. Celebrating its 207th year of witness and worship, St. Philip’s, the second oldest Episcopal Church founded by African Americans, is an historic church with a musical heritage that spans traditional hymnody, Negro Spirituals, as well as Gospel and contemporary music. There are two choirs, the Chancel Choir, and the Voices of Praises Gospel/Contemporary Choir, both of whom are vital to our worship.

 

Who We Seek: We seek an Acting Organist and Choirmaster who both loves tradition and who has an openness to new things and taking appropriate risks. The AOC should be able to employ music effectively, such that it becomes a means of invitation into a greater worship and participation in the liturgy by the worshiping community. The AOC will be one who is able to meet the liturgical needs and expectations of the existing congregation and yet able to think more broadly to encompass a demographic that is currently not a part of our congregation. Additionally, the AOC will be a creative thinker and problem solver with the ability to find and/or arrange music appropriate for the specific vocal abilities, gifts, and talents of our choir members.

 

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills (with individuals and groups)
  • Skilled organist, pianist, AND choir master
  • Solid understanding of Episcopal/Anglican liturgy
  • Expansive knowledge of hymnody (traditional western sacred music, gospel/contemporary Christian, global hymnody)
  • Experienced in blended worship (i.e. traditional and gospel/contemporary)
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a choir and choir members with a wide range of skills
  • Demonstrated ability to train voices
  • Proven ability to recruit and build a choir
  • Ability to help set, plan, and execute vision for overall music program that is also integrated with the vision for the church
  • Desire/willingness to work with children
